CS Skin Showcase: AK-47 | Nightwish
With the Season 5 Update, Valve finally brought out a major drop, adding the long-sourced Arabian-inspired The St. Marc Collection from the Steam Workshop, along with the spy-tech-themed The Control Collection, into the game. The skin we are appreciating today is the The St. Marc Collection Covert skin, AK-47 | Nightwish.
This skin was created by apel8 and YYanin. Creator apel8 keeps a fairly low profile, so you may not be familiar with him. Even so, he has contributed a number of skins, including Phobos, the Fever Dream series, M4A1-S | Nightmare, AWP | Containment Breach, AK-47 | Legion of Anubis, Phantom Disruptor, Zeus x27 | Olympus, and The Anubis Collection, among others...
This series of skins is designed around an Arabic-inspired style, drawing on stories from Arabian folklore. This particular skin comes from the creators' 《1oo1 Nights》 series, with Nightwish based on the wish-granting genie of the lamp.
“Choose your wishes wisely and with care.”
This skin uses a warm orange-red color theme throughout, with a ferocious-looking “jinn” (Jinn) worked into the artwork. The creator learned a great deal from Heroes of Might and Magic III, the animated film Aladdin, and legends built around magic lamps and wish-granting stories, and was drawn to those design concepts.
The creator later said that he met someone who explained the central role these beings play in Arabic mythology, and he also learned that many people fear them as "evil" spirits, which gave him a deeper understanding of these jinn and the darker side of the legends around them.
The “jinn figure” on the skin’s receiver and magazine fits the creators’ idea perfectly. It is not a charming genie, but a massive, menacing spirit that seems able to peer into the human heart. Its deep blue-purple body and the white, lightning-like energy flowing around it, rendered in a classic painterly style, create the oppressive feeling of something breaking its seal and forcing its way out. The jinn’s power is dangerous, beyond ordinary human understanding.
A classic, finely detailed illustrative style gives the whole weapon a sense of motion and optical illusion. Golden flames flow across the handguard, giving way to the black flame energy around the magazine, before finally converging at the stock into a chaotic vortex of energy. A menacing jinn clutches precious jewels that symbolize wealth—is this a wish, or a curse?
Some players have noticed something about this skin: this skin uses a large amount of gold-patterned finish. Valve is fairly strict about how it uses “gold”; it is usually reserved for commemorative purposes, and very few weapon skins in the game feature gold to any major extent. Among the skins that use large areas of gold, one is the commemorative FAMAS | Commemoration from the CS20 Collection, while others come from map collections, such as MAC-10 | Gold Brick, AK-47 | Gold Arabesque, and so on.

The creator noted in the description that this skin needed these gold textures, and Valve ultimately agreed with the idea, adjusting part of the finish before adding it to the game. “Hey, developers, if you’re seeing this design~ I know you’re not too fond of us using gold materials on skins, but this time, I really think adding a bit of gold is important. Gold is an instantly recognizable visual symbol in classic genie stories, and I think the gold material supports the design language in the right way here.” The gold finish is certainly eye-catching.
4K textures really carry weight here. The texture map file for this skin alone is a full 20 MB. That size gives the creators room to carefully design and optimize the finer details. For example, by using detailed metalness maps, normal maps, and other techniques, they created an intricate eye: the jinn’s red eye reacts to light, catching highlights and flashing when illuminated.

So, what did the creator's original design look like?
The creator’s original design was different from the version that made it into the game. In the first concept, a blue jinn wrapped around green fabric, and the gold lettering on the stock was replaced with golden flames. The metallic texture on the muzzle was also adjusted to a more matte, less metallic finish with a look closer to traditional painting, and blue flame details were added as well. Which version do you prefer?
The creator used a version with animated eyes on the cover, but the eyes on this skin do not actually have any animation in-game.
This skin uses the Gunsmith finish style, with a wear range of 0–1. As wear increases, it gradually scrapes away parts of the finish, while the metallic effect of the golden flames on the weapon body gradually fades, and the surface roughness increases, causing it to lose its shine.
