Skin Talk: Ancient “Top-Tier Skins” That No One Cares About Now

BUFFAssistant

When every player first got into Counter-Strike:GO, they always had the same question when they saw the market price of EMS One Katowice 2014 stickers“Why didn’t I start playing Counter-Strike earlier and stock up on a few EMS Katowice 2014 Sticker Capsules?”

But not every “old-school item” exploded a decade later the way Katowice 2014-related items did.Quite a few once top-tier items actually lost their premium over time, and some even faded into obscurity.Let’s take a look.

The Origin of It All — The Arms Deal Update

On August 13, 2013, The Arms Deal Update went live, and weapon skins finally arrived in Counter-Strike. At the time, aside from the "Cases" that players could open directly, the map collections that were only obtainable through in-game drops were considered more collectible.

The Militia Collection

Back in the ancient days before “trade-up players” even existed, and before the “Trade-Up Contract” was renamed the “Trade-Up Contract” (at that point, trade-ups could only use items from the same collection).Factory New items from map collections that could still drop despite having capped float ranges were always collector favorites.

M4A4 | Modern Hunter Factory New

And as a main rifle skin from the map collections, M4A4 | Modern Hunter became a collector favorite.Back in the early days, when float value wasn’t even shown in-game, a Factory New Modern Hunter was basically the equivalent of today’s Souvenir AWP | Dragon Lore.

‌

So why didn’t players try to use the “Trade-Up Contract” to trade up into a Factory New M4A4 | Modern Hunter themselves? Set aside the fact that players still hadn’t figured out the “trade-up recipe” at the time—the mechanics behind the output float value and input float values had not yet been discovered—and that they couldn’t even see the float values of the “inputs” in-game.Even if a player tried a trade-up with ten Factory New Nova | Modern Hunter skins, the best they could produce was a Minimal Wear M4A4 | Modern Hunter with a float value of 0.10.

The Post-Trade-Up Era

But all of that changed with the May 14 update. After the update, players could use items from different collections for trade-ups, which became what we now know as the Trade-Up Contract. Although collectors did not immediately realize what had happened, once players started using low-float inputs without “wear locks” (such as SSG 08 | Acid Fade) for trade-ups, producing a Factory New M4A4 | Modern Hunter through trade-ups proved viable, stripping it of its “drop-only” uniqueness. Its price also never returned to its 2014–2015 peak.

The Subsequent Price Trend of Modern Hunter

M4A4 | Modern Hunter wasn’t the only skin hit by the new “trade-up” update; prices across all map collections took a hit. The Nuke Collection, which was also subject to a capped float like M4A4 | Modern Hunter, was no exception. Prices have never broken back above their 2014–2015 peak since, and what they sold for ten years ago is almost exactly what they sell for today.

Factory New P250 | Nuclear Threat Price Trend
Even if “trade-ups” let the trade-up crowd successfully use capped float ranges to produce Factory New P250 | Nuclear Threats that collectors once thought were “one of a kind,” shouldn’t Souvenir items, which can’t be produced through trade-ups, be insulated from that price impact? But even the Factory New Souvenir P250 | Nuclear Threat, with only two known to exist, has risen far less than other early-era items from the same period, such as Sticker | Titan (Holo) | Katowice 2014 and AWP | Dragon Lore.

The Forgotten 2016 “All-Star” Stickers

In the Counter-Strike skin market, any sticker or skin with even a hint of being “discontinued” seems destined to rise over time.At the MLG Major Championship: Columbus 2016, Valve released the limited All-Star Blue sticker and All-Star Orange sticker for the MLG Columbus 2016 All-Star Souvenir Package.Even though these stickers really could not be produced in greater numbers by redeeming souvenir packages or opening sticker capsules, making them genuinely discontinued, they never managed to catch collectors’ interest.Maybe, at the end of the day, it was still just an M4A4 | Radiation Hazard?

The Vanishing “Crimson Web” and “Slaughter” Mythos

“real vs. fake web” comparison (real on the left, fake on the right)
‌
Before Valve had released more knife models and knife finishes, Crimson Web had always been a collector favorite. As one of the early knife finishes where pattern differences were the most obvious, the way the web appeared was always a major factor in Crimson Web valuations. Whether it was a “single web,” “double web,” or “big center web,” all of them were community-recognized premium patterns back in the old days. Add in the fact that Crimson Web on the “the old big three” is float-locked at 0.06, and a StatTrak™ Factory New “big web” Crimson Web knife was long treated by collectors as something on the level of a StatTrak™ Factory New AK-47 | Case Hardened Pattern #661.

Aside from the pattern mystique around Crimson Web, another old-school knife finish, the Slaughter series, also had its own template lore. Depending on how the texture was cut, patterns were labeled “diamond,” “heart,” or the rarest “diamond + heart.” But as hype around Slaughter knives gradually cooled, that whole pattern mystique faded from memory as well. Most of the old “top-tier patterns” now just sell at floor price.

The Forgotten Discontinued “Howl-Like” Skins

Although most people have heard the story of the one-of-a-kind Contraband M4A4 | Howl when they first get into the Counter-Strike skin market, what many do not know is that the same creator’s lower-tier skins were replaced as well, with USP-S | Orion replaced by USP-S | Caiman. Although USP-S | Orion can still be obtained through trade-ups, the lowest-tier replacements—P90 | Desert Warfare, Dual Berettas | Retribution, and CZ75-Auto | Poison Dart—cannot be generated through trade-ups. In that sense, these three Mil-Spec Grade skins are also discontinued, much like the Contraband M4A4 | Howl, yet their prices are not far off other skins from the same series.
