Skin Talk: Has the Fever Case Become the Latest “BUG” Case?
On April 1 (Beijing time), Valve rolled out the major Spring Cleaning Update on April Fools' Day, with the biggest highlight being the brand-new knife skins that arrived alongside the Fever Case: Chroma finishes for the Skeleton Knife, Survival Knife, Paracord Knife, and Nomad Knife!
Fever Case Knife Skins Overview
With the new case now out, the chance of pulling gem knives has a lot of players itching to open, and many have started cashing in the Armory Credits they stocked up in advance to redeem cases and start unboxing.Well-known "Doctor" xQc also appears to have unboxed a StatTrak™ Sapphire/P4 Skeleton Knife!
"Sapphire aaaaa"
But as more and more lucky pull clips showing off unboxed Ruby, Sapphire, and Black Pearl started flooding social platforms, a lot of people finally began to wonder—did Valve mess up the drop rate for gem knives again?
Why are so many people unboxing gem knives?
What should the "correct" drop rate for Doppler have been in the first place?
As discussed in the previous skin-market discussion, with the general consensus being that “Doppler's drop rate should be the same as the other finishes (Tiger Tooth, Rust Coat, Ultraviolet, Marble Fade, Damascus Steel),” the community currently sees the knife-skin drop rates in the later “Spectrum Case” as the most “correct,” namely 16.66% (1/6)
And within the Doppler series, that leads to a second assumption—namely, if Ruby and Sapphire should be rarer than P1-P4, and Black Pearl should be rarer than Ruby and Sapphire, then the reasonable odds would be P1-P4 at 20% each (1/5), Ruby and Sapphire at 9% each, and Black Pearl at 2%
Why the Fever Case's "drop rate" is very likely bugged
*The following is a reasonable guess based on the current distribution of rare special item pulls from the Fever Case
In fact, there is precedent for Valve “getting the Doppler drop rate wrong.” Back when the Chroma Case first introduced the Doppler series, Valve mistakenly gave the Doppler “subsets” (Ruby, Sapphire, Black Pearl, P1-P4) the same weighting as other finishes, which meant 40% of the knives unboxed were Doppler finishes!
Meanwhile, the “Rust Coat” series, which was supposed to be just as “common” as Doppler finishes, has instead become the rarest finish right now, with only two knives unboxed! Meanwhile, the supposedly “rarest” “Black Pearl” has instead been unboxed 15 times!

Is unboxing a Vanilla knife bugged too?
In CS’s official update notes, Valve explicitly stated that the "rare special items" available from this Fever Case are "knife skins with Chroma finishes"
But quite a few players are reporting that they've unboxed Vanilla knives from the Fever Case! That looks like the exact same bug as the Prisma Case earlier, which was also supposed to be a Chroma finishes pool!
Is it a bug, or is Valve doing it on purpose?
Quite a few players have noticed that Valve’s odds for pulling gem knives this time seem unusually high. Some players have argued that it’s just survivorship bias—that only the people who unboxed gem knives are posting videos, but the registration data for the skins in the database shows the same pattern. On BUFF, 4 of the top 10 low float Dopplers are gem knives!
