Skins/Cosmetic Items Talk: Which skin/cosmetic item is the hardest to unbox?
Even though everyone knows that “Souvenir AWP | Dragon Lore (Factory New),” “StatTrak™ [Knife] | Doppler Black Pearl (Minimal Wear),” and “StatTrak™ M4A4 | Howl” are extremely rare “top-tier high-end skins/cosmetic items,” just how rare are they? What is the hardest skin/cosmetic item to unbox? And how is the distribution across different wear ranges determined? Let’s take a look at Anomaly’s breakdown.
What are the drop odds for each rarity tier in different Weapon Cases / Music Kits / Sticker Capsules?
Music Kit — all blue, evenly distributed
Major Patch Pack — the top purple-tier Gold Patch, with 1/6 odds
Major Sticker Capsule — the highest-tier red-rarity Gold Sticker, with odds of 0.641%
Before we keep talking about which specific skins/cosmetic items are the hardest to unbox, there’s one thing you need to be clear on first—in CS, the different wear ranges are not evenly distributed!
The wear distribution of AK-47 | Case Hardened
Contrary to the first impression most people instinctively have—that “a float value is randomly generated as a number between 0 and 1”, in reality, skins/cosmetic items across different wear ranges are distributed differently from what their share of the wear range would imply.
Odds for Each wear range
Take Battle-Scarred, which covers the largest share of the wear range, as an example. Even though its wear range is the widest at 0.45-1.00, the odds of unboxing it are only 16%.
But when it comes to “float-capped / wear-locked” skins/cosmetic items, Valve does not change the wear distribution model; it only compresses it into the skin’s allowed min/max wear range, which also makes Factory New versions of upper-float-capped skins/cosmetic items even rarer.
How exactly should you calculate the drop rate/odds for a specific skin?First, let’s use the more common “StatTrak™ knife skin” as an example—what are the odds of unboxing a StatTrak™ + Minimal Wear + Tiger Tooth Talon Knife from the Prisma Case?
First, the chance of unboxing a gold is 1/390; then, the chance of hitting the specific Talon Knife type from that case is 1/4; the chance of it being StatTrak™ is 1/10; among knife finishes, the chance of unboxing the “Tiger Tooth” finish is 1/6; and the chance of Minimal Wear is 1/26. Multiply all of those odds together, and we get a ‘drop rate/odds’ of one in 2.5 million!
But if we raise the difficulty a bit, what are the odds of unboxing a StatTrak™ Minimal Wear Tiger Tooth M9 Bayonet from a Chroma Case that contains five knife types?
Similarly, the chance of unboxing a gold is 1/390; then, the chance of hitting the specific M9 Bayonet type from that case becomes 1/5; the chance of getting a StatTrak™ version is 1/10; the chance of unboxing the “Tiger Tooth” finish among knife skins is 1/6; and the chance of it being Minimal Wear is 1/26. Multiply all of those odds together, and the difficulty of actually “pulling it” jumps to one in 3.12 million!
If we crank the difficulty up another notch and swap the relatively "easy-to-pull" Tiger Tooth finish (1/6) for the "hardest-to-pull" Black Pearl (1/166.66), how much do the drop rate/odds fall? The answer is 1 in 213 million!
If we raise the difficulty another notch and pick a universally recognized “Tier 1 Blue Gem pattern,” like Karambit | Case Hardened (Pattern Template: 387), then add the requirement of Factory New + StatTrak™, just how rare would that pull be?
This knife currently does not have a "StatTrak™ version," but if we want to calculate its "drop rate/odds," it would be the same as follows:
First, the chance of unboxing a gold is 1/390; next, the chance of hitting the specific Karambit knife type from that case is 1/5; the chance for it to be StatTrak™ is 1/10; the chance of unboxing the “Partial Case Hardened” finish among knife finishes is 1/13; the chance of Factory New is 1/33; the chance of unboxing the specific #387 pattern template is 1/1000. Multiply all of those odds together, and we get a “drop rate/odds” of one in 8.5 billion!
Are the rare skins/cosmetic items in common perception really that hard to unbox?
Unboxing a Souvenir AWP | Dragon Lore (Factory New) from a Souvenir Package — 1/37,000 (but the Cobblestone Souvenir Package is just way too expensive)
The bugged Factory New R8 Revolver | Bone Mask that should not exist (an R8 that had not even been released yet, unboxed from an old Souvenir Package) — 1/425 (but very few Souvenir Packages that can unbox a bugged Factory New R8 Revolver | Bone Mask are left)
After looking at all the data above, do you still want to keep opening cases? Or do you still believe in your luck, and think you’ll be the one to unbox the first StatTrak™ Factory New Karambit | Case Hardened Full Blue Gem Pattern #387 in CS skin history? Let us know what you think in the comments~
