Sticker Meme Encyclopedia: Pop Dog (Pop Dog)

BUFFAssistant

Welcome to this episode of Sticker meme-lore encyclopedia. Among the 2025 Community Stickers, one Sticker is called “Pop Dog.” Does its name and design feel familiar?

Veteran players, and anyone who played 1.6, may have seen this cute little animal before. It is Pop Dog, one of CS's mascot-like icons. This Sticker is translated as Pop Dog, but earlier related elements were translated as “Pop Dog,” so below we will refer to it as “Pop Dog.” So, do you know where Pop Dog came from?

The first time players saw “Pop Dog” was probably while playing Train—the original Train—where one of the railcars had Pop Dog Graffiti on it.

There is also another map, Backalley, which likewise features a vending machine with a Pop Dog element on it. These maps also include barking sound effects.

So why does Pop Dog show up on these maps? As it turns out, Pop Dog came from the logo of Barking Dog Studios Ltd, a Canadian game developer that helped the CS team develop the CS beta; these two maps were designed and built by that studio.

Back in 1999, while Barking Dog Studios was working with Valve Software, the studio also hired another key CS creator, Minh Le (Gooseman); on Dust II’s A platform, Goose is a tribute to him.

Ahem, back to Pop Dog. On August 1, 2002, Take-Two announced that it had acquired Barking Dog Studios and reorganized it as Rockstar Vancouver. (Rockstar's Vancouver studio)

This studio, including the games it produced after later restructuring, worked on the following titles:

1999 — Counter-Strike Beta 5.0

2000 — Homeworld: Cataclysm

2002 — Global Operations

2002 — Treasure Planet

2006 — Bully (under the name Rockstar Vancouver)

2012 — Max Payne 3 (participated in development as part of Rockstar Studios)

And that logo design kept resurfacing throughout CS, including in some Graffiti and skin designs. The Graffiti line alone has 19 color variants:

Besides Graffiti, there are also some skin designs:

MAG-7 | Popdog

Creator Showcase: Qian Ceng Shan Wan Chong Lang

AUG | Death by Puppy

Player Showcase Author: Mao Mou

M4A1-S | Player Two

Player Showcase Author: Song66o

Some Stickers also feature Pop Dog references, for example:

Street Artist (Glitter)

This Sticker combines Pop Dog with the Graffiti motif that keeps showing up across CS. It depicts Pop Dog with a halo over its head, holding a spray can.

The easter egg on this Sticker is the silhouette of a Graffiti—the outline of that Graffiti.

The creator also designed other Pop Dog Stickers in different Sticker variants, including:
